Why is there a delay before I can place a bet on an in-play market?

Time delays are applied in some in-play markets following a dramatic change in market conditions. For example, when a goal is scored, a player is sent off, or a penalty is awarded in a football match. The delay gives users the opportunity to cancel or edit pending bets.
