Fred Done and brother Peter opened their first betting shop in Salford in 1967, largely funded by a substantial bet on England to win the World Cup in the previous year.
In 1997, Done opened his 100th shop and eight years later, his 500th. The company is currently the fourth largest high street bookmaker in the country and is the world’s biggest independent bookmaker
The current name Betfred was established in 2004 after a rebranding from the original name, Done Bookmakers.
In 2004, Betfred launched their digital offering betfred.com and provide sports betting, online casino, online games, bingo, lotto, online poker and virtual sports as well as pool betting.
Although its betting shops have spread nationally, Betfred’s headquarters remains close to Salford in Warrington.
As a result of their merger in 2016, Ladbrokes and Coral sold 322 betting shops to Fred Done, boosting Betfred’s high street presence by nearly 25 per cent to 1,700 shops as a result.
Betfred is licensed by the Government of Gibraltar and is therefore regulated by the Gibraltar Gambling Commissioner as well as the UK Gaming Commission.
